The Great Gatsby is often called the great American novel. Emblematic of an entire era, F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic tale of illicit desire, grand illusions, and lost dreams is rendered in a lyrical prose that revives a vanished world of glittering parties and vibrant jazz, where money and deceit walk hand in hand. Rich in humor, sharply observant of status and class, the book tells the story of Jay Gatsby's efforts to keep his faith – in money, in love, in all the promises of America – amid the chaos and conflict of life on Long Island's Gold Coast during the Roaring Twenties. This centennial edition presents the established version of the text in a collector's volume replete with social, cultural, and historical context, and numerous illustrations. The authoritative introduction examines persistent myths about Fitzgerald, his greatest work, and the age he embodies, while offering fresh ways of reading this iconic work.

The cultural ubiquity of The Great Gatsby is such that it is tempting to think we know almost all there is to say about it. But F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous work still has the capacity to surprise us. Perhaps few admirers of the novel know that it was also adapted for the stage by Owen Davis. In 1926 a successful production ran at the Ambassador Theater in New York City. This edition presents, for the first time in print, the original Broadway script: a fascinating social and literary document, now all but forgotten. The play re-forged Fitzgerald's novel into a fast-moving dramatization of parties and bootlegging, dancing and drinking, hot jazz, adultery and violence. It afforded an evening of first-rate entertainment for Manhattan theatergoers. Incorporating photographs of the original sets and actors, reviews, and publicity pasted into Fitzgerald's scrapbooks, this volume lifts the curtain anew on a singular drama.

Summary
The earliest version of Tender Is the Night was based on a sensational murder case known as the Ellingson Matricide. Fitzgerald mentions the case in a letter written from Juan-les-Pins, in late April 1926, to his literary agent Harold Ober. Fitzgerald is discussing his plans for the novel that he has under way:
The novel is about one fourth done and will be delivered for possible serialization about January 1st. It will be about 75,000 words long, divided into 12 chapters, concerning tho this is absolutely confidential such a case as that girl who shot her mother on the Pacific coast last year. In other words, like Gatsby it is highly sensational. (Life in Letters 140–41)
Matthew J. Bruccoli, writing in 1963, identified the case as the Ellingson Matricide (Bruccoli, Composition 18). Two newspaper stories about the crime were reprinted in 2003 in a volume of documentary materials about Tender Is the Night (Bruccoli and Anderson 18–23). No one, however, has investigated the case or explained why it might have attracted Fitzgerald's attention. In this essay I shall do so.
When the Ellingson Matricide occurred in January 1925, Fitzgerald was living at the Hôtel des Princes in Rome, revising the galleys of The Great Gatsby. He was anxious to follow that novel with another that was as good or better; the Ellingson case must have looked like promising material. His plan, which he developed in Paris that spring and summer, was to write a novel of matricide in which the protagonist, a young film technician named Francis Melarky, would be introduced into the company of a group of sophisticated American expatriates living in post-war France. Melarky was to have a history of violence and recklessness. He was to come to the Riviera while touring Europe with his mother, a fortyish woman who was attempting to reform him and keep him away from bad influences, including drink, which had triggered previous incidents of temper. Francis was to become involved with the expatriates, his mother was to disapprove, and he was to murder her in a fit of anger brought on by her meddling in his affairs.

(Life in Letters 140–41)Matthew J.

Summary
In October 1910 Theodore Dreiser decided, for the third time in his life, to make a try at professional authorship. He had already attempted full-time writing twice, once as a newspaper reporter from 1892 to 1895 and a second time as a freelance magazine writer from 1897 to 1900. Both times Dreiser had found it necessary to abandon authorship and move into magazine editing in order to support himself. Now, in the fall of 1910, he meant to try authorship again - this time as a writer of fiction.
Dreiser had no immediate reason to change occupations. He was well established as the editor of several large-circulation magazines issued by Butterick Publications and was married, rather conventionally, to a pleasant and affectionate woman. He had recently turned thirty-nine, had money in the bank, and was living in a comfortable flat in New York City. It is true that he had become entangled in an office romance with a woman too young for him, but he could probably have smoothed over that matter and continued to work at Butterick if he had wished to. He could also have left Butterick and sought editorial work elsewhere in the city. Instead he chose to resign from his post and begin writing fiction for a living. From a practical point of view his decision is hard to explain; sitting on his side of the desk, the editor’s side, he must have been reminded frequently of how precarious the lot of the professional author could be. Many of the scribblers with whom he dealt at Butterick were undoubtedly living from hand to mouth, angling for the next writing assignment or book advance, occasionally enjoying fat periods when money arrived but more often subsisting on short funds. Why should Dreiser choose such a life?

Acute stress elevates blood lipids, with the largest increases among men and postmenopausal women. The mechanisms for the effect are unknown, but may be due to altered lipid metabolism. This study investigated if acute stress induces transient reductions in triglyceride clearance in middle-aged men and women, and determined if gender and menopause affect triglyceride metabolism. Of the 35 women, half were premenopausal, and half were naturally postmenopausal; men (n = 35) were age matched. Clearance of an intravenously administered fat emulsion was assessed twice: once during a nonstress session, and again during a stress-testing session. During the stress session, a battery of behavioral stressors (serial subtraction, speech, mirror tracing, and Stroop) were performed for 40 min. The clearance rate of exogenous fat was significantly diminished during the stress, relative to the nonstress session. Women had more efficient clearance, relative to men, but there were no effects of menopausal status. The diminished ability to clear an intravenous fat emulsion during stress suggests one mechanism for stress-induced elevations in lipids.
